Author Biography

Migdrei Fernandez is a Cuban American children’s author whose love for Cuba remains close to her heart. Born on the island, she moved to America with her family when she was a child, carrying cherished memories of her beautiful island home. Its royal palms, tropical landscapes, and remarkable wildlife inspired her storytelling. Through her storytelling, Migdrei shares the beauty of Cuba with children and families discovering its wonders together.

Her book, Tito the Tocororo: A Song Across Cuba, introduces a young bird whose colorful feathers reflect the spirit of his homeland. When curiosity carries Tito far from his family, he begins a journey filled with uncertainty, new friends, and unexpected lessons. Through his adventures, Migdrei invites readers to experience Cuba’s forests, rivers, and mountains while exploring the meaning of courage, kindness, and belonging. Every encounter helps Tito grow.

For Migdrei, sharing Cuba’s natural treasures is also a way to keep its stories and traditions alive for a new generation. The book introduces young readers to the Tocororo, Cuba’s national bird, alongside other remarkable animals and beautiful places. Spanish words appear throughout the story, adding warmth and cultural connection. Every encounter encourages children to look closely at the world and appreciate its extraordinary diversity, beauty, and cultural richness.

Tito’s journey celebrates the kindness that grows when strangers become friends. A tiny Bee Hummingbird offers guidance, a Cuban Pygmy Owl shares wisdom, and Tito discovers how helping others can strengthen his own spirit. As he travels, he lends a hand to animals in need as new challenges arise. These moments reflect Migdrei’s hope that young readers will value compassion, friendship, resilience, and the quiet bravery of trying again.

At the heart of Migdrei’s writing is a simple belief: our connection to home stays with us, wherever life leads. Tito misses his mamá and papá, yet the friends he meets teach him that courage and caring can light the way forward. His return celebrates family, freedom, and the joy of belonging. Migdrei hopes these timeless and universal themes will speak to children and the adults reading beside them.

Tito the Tocororo marks the beginning of Migdrei’s vision for a children’s series inspired by Cuba’s distinctive wildlife and natural wonders. The story closes with a glimpse of Soli, another rare Cuban animal whose own adventure is about to begin. Through future stories, she hopes to nurture curiosity about the island and its creatures, while reminding readers of every generation that every journey can begin with kindness and hope.
